Getting around
Traffic in New York is unpredictable, which means traveling by car is your slowest option, whether you choose a taxi, city bus, or a rideshare service.
Whenever possible, we recommend walking, biking, or taking the subway between locations. Applications like Google maps will give you instant directions and times for walking, biking, or taking the or subway.
City streets follow a grid system, making it easy to navigate, even if it’s your first time in the city. Here are a few important points to remember:
- Streets run east to west
- Avenues run north to south
- Lexington, Park, and Madison Avenues run between 3rd and 5th Avenues
- 5th Avenue divides Manhattan between East and West sides
- 6th Avenue is also called the Avenue of the Americas
Riding the subway
The New York City subway system operates 24/7, so you’ll always have a ride. If you didn’t pre-order a MetroCard when you registered for conference and you’re planning to ride the subway, you’ll need to purchase one. Most stations sell them, as do neighborhood merchants. Use this helpful resource on the MTA website to find out where you can purchase a MetroCard.
Tips for navigating the subway:
- Download the New York Subway MTA app, which has a route planner. It’s free for both Apple and Android users.
- Choose the subway line you need by letters and numbers, not colors, or you might end up in the wrong place!
- Determine whether you need an express or local train, which are distinguished on maps by black and white dots and bars. Black dots and bars indicate local stations, and trains that make every stop on the line will stop here. White dots and bars indicate express stations, and all trains on a line will stop here. NOTE: If you get on an express train, it will skip certain stops. Be sure to consult the subway map to confirm the express train won’t skip over your stop.
- To get on the correct platform from the street, check the sign that designates uptown (the upper part of Manhattan) or downtown (generally the lower part).
- If you’re not sure whether you’re getting on the right train or standing on the right side of the platform, ask somebody! There are also maps in every station.
Traveling to & from airports
